Back in 2016, Dr Altaf Saadi published a Huffington Post blog titled, "I Thought My Ivy League Degrees Would Protect Me From Bigotry. I Was Wrong."

Dr. Saadi's article hit home with me as my wife is a nurse and I am, unfortunately, very familiar with hearing stories of patients making racist and Islamophobic remarks.

Dr. Saadi joins me this episode to share her experiences as a Muslim in the healthcare field as well as tips for other professionals facing racism, bigotry in the work place.

About Dr. Saadi

Dr. Altaf Saadi is a neurology Chief Resident at the Partners Neurology Residency Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She graduated cum laude from Harvard Medical School, where she completed a thesis about preventive health practices among refugee women at a local Boston community health center. Her community involvements included leading a student group providing social services to refugee families and serving as a counselor for the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. In recognition of her work, she received the Harvard Medical School Dean’s Community Service Award.

This interview is with dedicated author, Asmaa Hussein. Her book, "A Temporary Gift: Reflections on Love, Loss, and Healing" journals the tragic loss of her beloved husband Amr Kassem. On Friday, August 16, 2013, Asmaa's husband Amr attended a peaceful protest in Egypt. An Egyptian army sniper shot and killed him, leaving a woman widowed and a child fatherless. One thing Asmaa has learned over these years is that Allah has your back. No matter what tragedy befalls us, we must always put our reliance in Allah and trust that He knows what is best for us.

Poet and Activist Mona Haydar joins me this episode to talk about her background, "Ask a Muslim", recent viral video and future projects. Prior to the release of her viral hit video, "Hijabi" (currently over 1.1M views on YouTube), her husband Sebastian and her decided to setup a stand in Cambridge, Massachusetts with signs that read "Ask a Muslim", "Talk to a Muslim", "free coffee and donuts", and "free conversation" encouraging open dialogue. Mona shares her upcoming video called "Dog", which addresses the current problem of Muslim men in positions of power preying on young women.

This interview is with dedicated Muslimah, Heraa Hashmi. She is a 19 year old Colorado college student, who had an encounter with her classmate during a group project. Her classmate asked, "why do Muslims not condemn terrorism?" That simple question was part of a myraid of questions / comments that had propelled her to find evidence that Muslims are "in fact" condemning acts of terror. That night at home, Heraa started to do some "googling" and soon compiled a list of Muslims, a huge focus was on American Muslims, condemning terrorism. Over the next few weeks, that list grew to over 700 pages. At the suggestion of a friend, she tweeted out her work..and as they say, "the rest is history."
